Okay, I’ll admit it – I’m not good at typing. I have bad habits of always looking down at the keyboard while I’m typing. See, I’m even doing it now as I type this! Mimi, you will not look at the keyboard. Look up….. 🙂
One of the very few downsides of homeschooling – no access to classes on typing! Or so I thought. The closest thing that I have had to taking a typing class before this was watching a 20 minute video from the library about where to place your fingers. Mom (aka Mrs. S) has been wanting us to learn how to type for quite some time, but we never found anything low-cost that would effective. That is, until we found Typing Web.
Typing Web is “a free online typing tutor & keyboarding tutorial for typists of all skill levels.” They teach you the basics of typing, from the Home Row to the top and bottom rows, to more advanced things, like Speed Drills. After each lesson, which is about 15 individual lessons long, you take a typing test, which consists of 3 pages of text with 8 sentences each. After each lesson or test, you can see your accuracy and WPM speed (Words Per Minute). Apparently, their fastest member types at 154 WPM! I’m not nearly as fast, clocking in at a speeding 20 WPM. Oh well, you have to start somewhere……
They also have typing games, like Keyboard Ninja, which is similar to the game that it is based off of – Fruit Ninja. Fruits come flying up onto your screen, and the only way you can slice them is to type the letters that appear above them. Don’t miss a fruit, or you’ll get a strike. Three strikes, and you’re out! Or, you can play Type Toss, where you have to type the word on various animals in order to knock the duck over.
I also saw that they have “Typing Certifications,” whatever those are. They sound pretty important.
For teachers, they have a separate teacher dashboard, where
parents teachers can keep track of their kid’s student’s progress, as well as see who is the best in the class and each student’s statistics.
Over all, Typing Web is an awesome resource that will have you speed typing in no time.
